The Sweet Spot – Duluth GA #foodiefriday

The hubs and I were on our way home from Atlanta, Georgia. I had a taste for cupcakes. I searched online and found there was a bakery called The Sweet Spot located in Duluth, Georgia.

I told hubby that I would like to stop there but after putting it into GPS I saw it was a 5 mile detour off of the interstate. With that in mind, I told him that I changed my mind and we did not have to go there. He insisted saying if I wanted a cupcake, let’s go get it.

When we arrive, I took in the location. Located in a strip mall, the bakery had very simple but elegant decor. It looked as if it could be featured in a real simple or Martha Stewart magazine.

There were so many different flavors of cupcakes to choose from and everything looks so delicious. I decided to order the pistachio cupcakes, red velvet cupcake, and a tres leches cake bar.

I was so excited to dig into my desserts.

I started with the tres leches. I didn’t examine the cake closely enough before I bought it, otherwise I would have realized it had a layer of vanilla pudding in between the cake and the whip topping. I do not know where adding vanilla pudding is considered traditional for this desert, but none of my friends have ever put vanilla pudding into tres leches. The cake had a firm texture with which it could absorb the milk that would have been poured into it. However, the milk did not have much flavor. I could not discern any hint of spice like cinnamon or nutmeg which are usually common in this desert.

The pistachio cupcake had little pieces of pistachio nuts throughout the cake and was topped with a lightly pistachio flavored whipped cream. The flavors were not very intense. It tasted like it did not have enough flavor. In my opinion, either the topping or the cake needs to have a strong pistachio flavor. One or the other, but not both. Too much would it be overwhelming. In this both had very muted flavors.

My last hope for a satisfactory dessert was the red velvet cupcake. I saved this for last because I love red velvet cake and I helped this would be delicious. It had the proper density and texture for red velvet cake. However, It was topped with whipped cream and not cream cheese frosting. Another desert that I took for granted that bakers knew how they should be served.

TOW opinion: I was disappointed that the desserts were not prepared the way that I have traditionally known them to be prepared. I did learn if I am going to a new bakery, I need to ask more questions to ensure what I am purchasing is what I am expecting to receive.

Mission Mini – San Francisco

One of the benefits of visiting a large city is that they probably have plenty of specials using Groupon Now feature. It is where you look for deals at participating stores/restaurants that are happening for a limited time period (usually only for the day).

When Hubby and I were in San Francisco, I checked Groupon Now and found a Mission Mini cupcake deal. I love deals and I love cupcakes. And when they are mini cupcakes, I think I love them even more because I can get more flavors to satisfy my sweet tooth. I quickly bought the deal and told Hubby that we were on our way to Mission part of town for cupcakes. After he finished rolling his eyes (he has no sweet tooth), he put the address in the GPS so that we could drive there.

This bakery of minis offers different flavors depending on the seasons.

Flavors of the cupcakes I ordered (shown in the picture from top left going clockwise)

Ruby Red Velvet – Red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting {This was all right, but not as sweet as I would have liked.}

Banana Maple – Banana cake topped with a pure maple syrup glaze {the texture seemed more like a breakfast bread and less like a cake, but I think that is because it is a vegan cake. It was still really yummy.}
Swiss Almond Coconut – Fresh coconut cake with buttercream topped with toasted almond and shredded coconut. {I always love coconut cupcakes.}

Cinnamon Horchata – Mexican rice milk cake with cream cheese frosting topped with freshly ground cinnamon. {This had a mix of flavors that I was not familiar with -sweet cinnamon with a hint of spice-, but tasty nonetheless. }

Pumpkin Spice – Pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting {Quite possibly, my favorite pick of all the cupcakes. The texture and flavor were perfect.}
Lemon – Lemon cake topped with cream cheese frosting {This was good lemony flavor, but a little drier than I would have liked for lemon cake.}

If are in San Francisco, especially the Mission area, do yourself a favor and go to Mission Minis.

Mission Minis, your deal on Groupon worked! I might live on the other side of the country, but you have a customer anytime I am in the San Fran area!

Kara’s Cupcakes – Napa CA

Kara’s cupcakes has locations through San Francisco and Napa. I went to the one located in Oxbow Market place in Napa. You have to pass the cupcakes to get to the real food. But while you are trying to concentrate on whether you want tacos or chicken or beef, you are really thinking about what cupcake you are going to order for dessert. Maybe that is not what happens to you, but that is what happened to me.

I LOVE sweets.

Kara’s Cupcakes has mini and regular sized cupcakes. All of them look so pretty and delectable. The chocolate with chocolate frosting was filled with caramel and topped with sea salt. The cake was moist, soft, but not too crumbly. The creamy caramel mixed well with the chocolate cake and frosting with a tiny bite of saltiness from the sea salt. Mini Perfection and Decadent Delight!!!! I heard singing when I bit into it. And I think I eyes rolled back into my head a little bit while time stood still. Or at least that is the way it seemed.

Once I finished that one, I wanted to save my coconut cupcake for later. Well, the frosting was calling me. I took a little of the cream cheese frosting on the tip of my finger. I did not expect it to be so creamy. This was LITERALLY the best cream cheese frosting I have ever had at from a bakery. Yes I said literally. I meant it.

As you can imagine, the cupcake did not last long.

It is a good thing I do not live closer to Kara’s Cupcakes because I would be so chubby from eating cupcakes every day.
