Guest Stephen Lomer muses about his fave books @stephenlomer #KindleUnlimited

This guest post is by Stephen Lomer, author of Stargazer Lilies or Nothing at All.

My favorite book. How does a person even decide that? It’s like asking a mother which of her children she loves the most.

Okay, maybe it’s not exactly like that. But it’s tough. It is one tough call.

My knee-jerk reaction is to answer with Stephen King’s The Stand, which held the number-one spot in my heart for a very, very long time.

In addition to it being a really well-written, well thought-out novel, I was always amazed by the sheer length of the thing. The complete and uncut edition is 1,200 freaking pages. Writing a book that long is daunting enough, but to keep it fresh and compelling and interesting from cover to cover is a truly Herculean feat.

So yes, The Stand was my favorite book for a good long while. But then I discovered JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

And everything changed.

Now, Harry Potter fans will no doubt ask why not The Goblet of Fire or The Deathly Hallows. Those are both excellent books, but here’s why I chose Sorcerer’s Stone.

First, it’s how I discovered it. By the time I got around to reading it, I believe Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was already on the shelves. Pottermania was already in full swing, but I had no interest. Zero. None. I thought it was nothing more than a very popular children’s book.

Then one day I was in Boston at the Prudential Center, intending to meet an old friend for lunch. She was delayed, so I wandered into Barnes & Noble and saw Sorcerer’s Stone sitting on the shelf. There was nothing else that really interested me, and it was cheap, so I thought: What the hell. I’ll buy it.

As I waited for my delayed friend, I started reading it, and immediately fell in love with the simple, straightforward prose. I had never been drawn into a story so quickly, so easily, so deeply before. I understood in a flash why this book was so popular. As it turned out, my friend was delayed indefinitely and couldn’t make lunch, but I couldn’t have been happier. I had much better things to do.

So yes, I have a very fond memory of the discovery process. But that doesn’t explain why Sorcerer’s Stone was never supplanted by other Potter books, which are arguably better written. It’s because Sorcerer’s Stone was the beginning of the journey. It was the very first peek into that glorious wizarding world, and like your first kiss or your first love, nothing will ever be quite that level of sweet.

I hope that someday I find another book that makes me feel the same way I did when I first read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. But if that never happens, I can always crouch down into that cupboard under the stairs at Number 4, Privet Drive and relive it all over again.

Stephen Lomer has been writing books, novellas, short stories, and scripts for nearly a decade, and one or two of them are actually pretty good. Elephants Never Forget #review #shifterromance #paranormal

Elephants Never Forget: BBW Shapeshifter Romance (Safari Shifters Book 3)

2heart

Synopsis
In this world, were-animal shifters are well known. There is not any conflict or animosity between were-animals and humans.

Branch is an elephant shifter living and working at a safari resort. He loves his bachelor life and is not looking for a mate.

Maura is vacationing at the resort where Branch works. It should have been her honeymoon, but her fiancé left her. Seeing her high school crush Branch, causes all kinds of emotions but she is conflicted about whether or not to act on them.

Opinion
This book was lacking something for me. I was probably too excited to read it because it was an elephant shifter romance. I never read about an elephant shifter. I wanted it to be good. An ELEPHANT SHIFTER!!! I cannot convey exactly how much I wanted this story to work. Instead, it was okay. The word “corny” also comes to mind.

It is hard to explain all the reasons for my lackluster feeling but it came down to this

The villain seemed more cartoonish than Wil e coyote.

Branch goes from Mr Playa to Me-love-you-long-time in a matter of PAGES!!! Image result for you could say things are getting pretty serious gif

Let’s not forget that Maura was very recently dumped by her fiancé. She is most definitely on the rebound.Image result for slow down romeo

My biggest annoyance with this book is the title. I feel it was click bait. The title is “Elephants never forget”, BUT Branch the elephant shifter “couldn’t remember ever saying anything“ to Maura in high school.

“He was drawing a total blank” even though they were in the same graduating class.

By that point, I was done. How can you have an elephant shifter, a title “Elephants Never Forget” and the elephant hero CANNOT REMEMBER the one girl from high school that he is supposedly madly in love with now.

Down with the Shine  by Kate Karyus Quinn

4heart

Synopsis
As the story opens, Lennie does not have the best of circumstances. Lennie lives with her almost comatose mother and 3 uncles who sell moonshine. Her father is a con artist, notorious bank robber, and all around bad person. Lennie is not a delinquent, but it seems everyone in authority assumes she is. To make matters worse, she finds out that her best friend was brutally murdered.

Considering her life, she wants to escape and, for once, have some fun. She steals some moonshine from her uncles and goes to a party were all the “cool kids” will be. All night she is giving shots and pretending to grant wishes. After a wild and crazy night, she goes home and passes out drunk.

The next morning, to everyone’s horror, the random, wild, insane wishes of a bunch of drunk teenagers are all coming true. Now it is up to Lennie to learn the rules of wish granting and figure out how to fix this mess without making things worst.

Opinion
I chose this book because of the cover. I love the mason jar visual with the mysterious vapor.

Image result for judge a book
I have read books with the similar theme of “Be careful what you wish for”. However, none of the previous stories have wishes-gone-wrong to this level.

Image result for what is the worst that could happen
I do not usually like first person novels, but made an exception in this case because I was so intrigued by the plot line. In the beginning, I did not like Lennie very much though. I thought I would sympathize with her more because of her circumstances. She seems to be floating through life with no one who cares about her.

Her dad is a sociopathic criminal. Her mom is barely there emotionally for her. And her uncles try to keep her out of trouble but otherwise ignore her. She has an inner dialogue going at all times in which her snarky comes through to the reader. There were some positive aspects to her personality displayed when she talked about her best friend and how Dylan’s death affected her.

All throughout the book, while I thought she made a lot of bad decisions (VERY BAD DECISION MAKING), I could not help to wonder if I could have done any better. She thought her life was one way, only to find out some of the reasons behind what happened and why. She did not have the luxury of enough time to fully examine the pros and cons of what to do. Making quick decisions is not the best and when it can mean life or death, which adds to the pressure even more.

While you have to read the story for yourself to see how everything gets resolved, everything is resolved in a nice a neat way.

TOW Final Word: Buy, Borrow, Pass?
BUY! This is a quirky, slightly gruesome young adult novel with some dark humor sprinkled in. For me to recommend it, you know it must be something special. I am not usually one to recommend young adult lit.

Billionaire Unbound:: The Billionaire’s Obsession ~ Chloe (Volume 8)

4heart

Synopsis
Chloe just got out of a bad relationship and thinks that some distance from her ex will help. So she agrees to work on Gabe’s farm as his veterinarian.

Gabe has crushed/lusted/loved Chloe for a long time. He thinks she is off limits as the sister of his best friend. But after 1 kiss, all bets are off. He is not trying to break up her relationship, but after finding out she is unattached, he will do his best to help her to see that he is the man for her.

Opinion
This is another story in the Billionaire Obsession series by J.S Scott. I think that as this series continues, I have been able to see the progress in her writing style and plot themes. She has been able to keep the stories from becoming stale. It is not like I am reading the same plot over and over. There are times where elements are the same, but it is not so repetitive that I am bored with the story.

Image result for entertain me

In this story, the heaviest theme was the abuse of Chloe’s previous relationship. It was at times brutal to read but it made me want Chloe to find happiness even more. Plus, it goes to show that money and a good family cannot always shield a person from being in an abusive relationship.

I sympathized with Chloe because many of the reasons why she stayed parallel to real life victims of abuse. I could understand how Chloe’s family felt once they found out what had been happening because they did not see the signs. The Coulter family is so tight-knit, that I could imagine the emotional reactions when they realized they were unable to shield their sister from being in a painful relationship.

But this book is not all tears and sadness, because Gabe was more than willing to be the man and protector that Chloe needed in her life. With that, Gabe secured his spot on my Billionaire book boyfriend list.

When Time Stops: Dragon Shifter Surprise Pregnancy Romance

4heart

Synopsis
Aeon is a time dragon living in France. His brothers tricked him out of protecting the family’s lair and treasure for the year. He decides he will use the time to travel. At his first stop, he visits on of the family’s many night clubs. He meets Isobel and they have a one night stand.

Isobel is on her honeymoon vacation minus the groom. He left her at the altar. She is determined to have some fun. The hot and heavy attraction with Aeon fits the bill. After their night of fun, Isobel is kidnapped and made the prize in a dragon tournament.

Aeon usually avoids these tournaments because he thinks they are too barbaric for modern times, but he enters because he feels that he owes it to Isobel to win her freedom.

Opinion
This book brought the dragon heat early! From the moment they saw each other in the night club, I could feel the intensity of their connection radiate off the page.

Image result for girl got it goin on
I still don’t understand how a time dragon can bend time, but it worked for the story.
Isobel held her own despite everything her narcissistic mother, philandering fiance, and the whole kidnapping ordeal with a lot of horny dragons drooling over her.

Image result for you do you boo
All the dragon fighting brought a medieval vibe to the story even though it happened in modern era. Throughout the different challenges, nothing goes totally as expected. There were even a few plot twists that threw me for a loop.

Like WHAAA?

Image result for mind blown
I am talking about things in addition to the surprise pregnancy. It is too cute when she tells him that she is pregnant. That makes me smile just thinking about it.
