Welcome to Thursday’s Thoughts. On the last Thursday of each month, I share the thoughts of a featured author in the form of answers to questions I posed to them. July’s featured author is Jo Tannah.

How long have you been writing?

Hmmm…I always smile when I get asked this. I’ve been writing since forever it seems. From a young age I guess, when I first started taking down the stories told me so I never forgot them? Growing up, books were a rarity in my country, not until a nationwide bookstore opened its doors back in the 1970s did we get them on a constant basis, otherwise, it was one delivery every quarter or six months.
Professionally, I really began writing articles for online magazines but they were technical stuff like medical journals. As a blogger, about four years and finally, as an author, I submitted my first story two years ago.

Are you a procrastinator or are you proactive when it comes to deadlines?

I am proactive, as I truly hate deadlines. I don’t like the pressure and want to work in peace and quiet without the deadline gremlin whispering in my ear.

What is your favorite motivational phrase?

Oh, I love this question. My favourite is one that my father used to say: “If plan A fails, go for plan B. If B fails, go to C and all the way to Z if need be. If all else fails, go back to plan A, otherwise, it’s time to read the instructions.”

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I read, watch movies, listen to music and read again. Other than those, I clean the house and drive the car all over town to do errands.

It could have all been fun and romantic, but for a stalker who refused to accept that Arjan was not a possession.
Being in a relationship with a billionaire can be nice but restrictive, especially when there are bodyguards around.

The Surrogate’s Secret #contemporaryromance

The Surrogate’s Secret

3heart

Synopsis

Miguel is a confirmed bachelor but decides to marry the surrogate of his brother’s children so that he can take them to Chile. His mom is extremely sick and he thinks that she needs grandbabies to give her the will to live.

Sheri was planning to give her twin babies to her best friend since she was the surrogate. When an unfortunate accident claims their lives, Sheri raises the children as her own. No one is going to take them away from her. Not even their wealthy, handsome uncle. She cannot let him find out her secret; otherwise he will have the leverage he needs to potentially win custody.

Opinion

This book is all about misunderstandings. There was one major misunderstanding from the beginning that affects the way that Miguel treats Sheri. She reacts to his treatment in a way that would logically be expected.

Sheri had no illusions of romance in the beginning. In fact, Miguel strong armed her into marriage but then tried to dress up the proposal by saying:

“Just so you know I find you very attractive.
I’ll be the best husband I know how to be if you’ll be upfront with me about your wants and needs.”

All he wanted was honesty. Sheri has a secret. She did not lie per se, but she was feeling guilty for withholding all the facts.

Considering how he was acting, I can understand why she was worried about coming clean. In a similar situation, I probably would have kept the secret too.

Should you buy? This is a cute romance. As the elements of the conflict are revealed, you see how both the hero and heroine draw to some erroneous conclusions.

The Baddest Virgin in Texas #cowboyromance

3heart

Synopsis

Jessi is the youngest sibling and only girl in the Brand Family. With sights set on ranch hand Lash, she is determined to make him love her.

Lash grew up in a foster home and was determined to be a loner when he grew up. When Jessi starts making eyes at him, he sees it as a bad idea for them to get involved. Never mind the additional fact that she a host of overprotective brothers.

Opinion

This romance should come with a disclaimer, “Do not try this at home.”

The title is misleading too. It should be “The Most Naive, Foolhardy Virgin in Texas“.

The story was okay enough as stories go with predictable villains. A part of me could not get over how many times Jessi said that she was going to her man  since she set her sights on him. She was going to convince him that he loved her. That sounded kind of bratty to me. Plus, the first guy she did not know her whole life is the one she picks to fall in love with. I do not think her standards were too high.

Lash was an emotionally mess from childhood foster home hell. Anything resembling family scared him because his memories were not pleasant.

Overall, Jessi is very spoiled and Lash was an extreme commitment phobe. How the two of them end up together was romantic but unrealistic.

Should you buy? If you like cowboy romances, this will entertain you.

Romancing in the workplace is only for story books

As the story starts, Violet is a secretary for attorney Blake. She likes her job but she does not appreciate his brusque treatment. He seems to save the especially unkind words for her and this is worsened when he found out she has a crush on him. Considering he has been treating her like crap, I cannot understand why she cares for  him.

In any case, she cannot take it anymore and ends up quitting her job and working for his enemy. He created a hostile work environment and, in my opinion, she could have sued him. We all know that would not have made a good love story, but I digress.

While in her new job she improves her wardrobe loses weight and begins to get her hair done. Since this is a small town Blake still sees her quite often. He gets a tinge of jealousy and make subtle hints for Violet to return to work for him.

The author description of Violet makes me think she was kind of homely and overweight. As a result Blake was not interested in her. But once she started exercising wearing make up and getting her hair done he took notice.

  • Does that make him shallow?
  • Or is it that she began to have more self-confidence she was ready to be in a relationship?

I have not figured out which is the case for this book. If you read it, let me know what you think.

Other than that, Boss Man had some surprises that thicken the story’s plot and made it very interesting. In the end Blake might technically be the boss but Violet has a lot to say too.
