Foodie Friday @Caffe312 #uptownGreenwood #winebar #coffee

This is a BELATED Foodie Friday post!

foodiefriday

It seems for December, there has been so much going on that I totally missed the fact that I did not post for Foodie Friday.

I have been eating so much delicious food, that it was hard to decide what to spotlight. In the end, I decided to talk about a local restaurant: Caffe 312

Caffe 312 is an uptown Greenwood restaurant that is a wine/coffee bar. The food is European style. They use a lot of locally sourced produce and organic ingredients for the food. However, they also import scrumptious cheeses and other delectable desserts.

I think that they have the best quiche in town. I love it paired with a salad or soup. Pictured is the French onion soup. Soups change depending what is in season. I have had butternut squash soup and purple cauliflower soup. Both were also really tasty.

Their pastry case always has an assortment of goodies to choose. If I want something light, I usually choose a macaroon. Pistachio is my favorite flavor.

As a side note, Caffe 312 also has Music on Main. They feature a musical guest Sunday evenings at 7pm with no cover!

I recommend going. You will not be disappointed.

City Scape Winery #winetasting #drinklocal #SCwine

This Foodie Friday is about City Scape Winery!

City Scape is a winery making wines in the Upstate. They like to say that they are “Greenville County’s premier winery”. Actually, they are located in Pelzer. Not where you would think to go for a wine tasting. I found them on Groupon. Follow the GPS and make sure the gas tank is full because they are deep in the country. But once there, the tasting is worth the trip.

As you can tell from my notes below, their wine flavors run the gamut so there is something for everyone.

Tasting Room Hours: 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (if you have a group, call ahead to make sure they will have room to serve you)

Of the 9 different wines that I tried during the wine tasting, here are my notes

Uptown White – Dry, light. I consider this to be a standard white dinner wine.

Pineapple Riesling – Very sweet almost like a nectar. Would go well in a fruit punch drink.

Carolina Charm – Sweet tea flavored, does not taste like wine. I prefer unsweet tea, so this was too sweet.

Green Apply Gewurz – Refreshing, crisp flavors. I could taste hints of the apple. This was more tart than sweet for me.

Upstate Blush – Smells pretty, but not as sweet as I anticipated

Raspberry White Zinfandel – Smells like cotton candy, tastes like berries

Urban Red – Dry, strong flavor, heavy on the tongue

Downtown Red – Tart, dry, strong

Palmetto Red – Dry, smells like muscadines

Favorite from the tasting: Raspberry White Zinfandel

The reds were too dry for me. Most of the whites were light but not very sweet.

Inn on the Square #innonthesquare @uptowngreenwood #foodiefriday

It’s time for Foodie Friday!

If you are not familiar with Uptown Greenwood SC, you probably are unaware that Inn on the Square is re-opening. Or what a big deal that previous statement is. It was about 5 years ago that Inn on the Square closed. This was unfortunate for many reasons but mainly because it is in a prominent place in Uptown Greenwood. It needed to be occupied and opened.

Earlier this year, the new owners said that they beginning renovations and were opening this fall. Date was set for October 1st. They hired Claire Griffth as the Events Manager (best thing they could have done in my opinion) and she began furiously working to make sure everything was in place to open without delays.

On Sept 25th hubby and I were invited to be dinner guests while the chef and kitchen staff tested a few of their menu items.

When we arrived, we were told we could go the Fox and Hound lounge for a drink while we waited for our table to be arranged. When we walked inside, I felt like it was classy, but in an unpretentious way.

We were called into the dining room and our server took our order. I listed everything that people from our table ordered—

Appetizers

Lump Crab Fritters (I ordered) – these were about the size of a golf ball. Lots of lumps of crab and corn. Crispy to perfection on the outside. I want this again. I told the chef that is going to be the first thing I order when they open.

Pulled Chicken Spring Rolls – comments at the table were that these were outstanding.

Antipasto Platter – comments at the table were that this was delicious too. I wish I could have ordered this as well as the crab fritters.

From the Garden

Argula and Apple Salad (I ordered) – Delicious! Arugula, lettuce greens, apple, candied walnuts, raisins, and blue cheese tossed in apple cider vinaigrette. My kind of salad. The bite of arugula paired well with the apple. The walnuts added crunch. While the blue cheese added a tart creamy flavor.

Entrees

Catfish and Grits – I tasted the fish and LOVED the breading mix because it was really crunchy but the fish was light and flakey on the inside. I do not prefer to eat grits, but my friend said those were good too.

Peppercorn Tuna (I ordered) – Peppercorn tuna is one of my favorite dishes. I like a lot of peppercorns and this was prepared the way I like it. It was served with wasabi mashed potatoes. Genius! Not very spicy, but there was enough of the flavor there to know there was wasabi in it.

Pan-Seared Sirloin – Hubby said this was the best sirloin he had. He ordered medium rare.

Desserts

Free formed apple tart with caramel sauce – I liked this but wish there had been more caramel sauce. Tasty!

Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting – This was a little dense for carrot cake, but the flavor and frosting was good.

Almond Joy inspired mousse (I ordered) – I tasted all of the desserts and this was my favorite. It was chocolaty and creamy but not super sweet.

Moho Chocolate

Fort Street Tourism Village Belize City

I have seen Moho Chocolate mentioned on Tripadvisor and other forums as a place to visit while in Belize City. Moho Chocolate is made with organic cacao grown in the Moho River valley in southern Belize. In the store, they explain the chocolate making process. But I feel that they are more about selling chocolate than they are about explaining how it is made.

They sell chocolate bars (a little bigger than Hershey size) for $7 USD. They also have truffles, brownie mix, chocolate scrubs, and other products made with chocolate. I bought a mix to make my own kaluha. Now I need a bottle of vodka to mix with it.

There is a “Make your own chocolate” bar also. You can have up to 3 toppings and you make 3 bars for $20 USD. Some of the topping choices include: coconut, granola, oreo cookies. I did not do this because there were not many toppings to choose and the ones they had did not seem to mix for my tastes.

I did try a sample of ginger dark chocolate. It was very good. I do not know why Belizean chocolate is not more well knowing and popular.

Overall, I like Moho. I do not understand why more people do not know about Belizean chocolate. It tastes good to me. I think it is better than Hersey’s (which I know to true chocolate aficionados that is not saying much). Hopefully the organic chocolate market will grow in the future to allow the farmers to continue supporting their families.

If you want to go and you are staying in Belize, find out when the cruise ships are in port. The Fort Street Tourism Village will be open then. Also, bring ID as they only let tourists into the facility (not for locals).

As Seen on TV #Veggetti Spiral Vegetable Slicer/Cutter #productreview

foodiefriday

foodiefriday

This month’s post is about a product that I am sure the beginner foodie probably has been looking to buy for their kitchen.

I am the type of person that finds comfort in carbs. I know that is not the best for my waistline.

I have been looking for ways to increase my vegetable intake and reduce my carbs. One of the best ways to do this is by finding vegetables to substitute for bread, rice, potatoes, and pasta.

I consider myself to be a logical person. So when I watch info-commercials, I try use logic to determine how much is hype and how much is actual truth about the product. They want you to “Call Now” and say “But wait! There’s more!” I am skeptical most of the time. However, on occasion my interest is sufficiently peaked that I want to try the product.

That is what happened with the As Seen on TV Veggetti Spiral Vegetable Slicer/Cutter. I thought the concept seemed easy enough. I am of the opinion that I can never have too many kitchen gadgets. Ignoring hubby’s eye rolling and snide comments about yet another gadget, I bought mine at a store in the “As Seen on TV” section. It also available on Amazon.
If you have not heard of it, here is how they describe it from the website

  •  The Veggetti Spiral Vegetable Slicer turns veggies into healthy spaghetti instantly!
  • Perfect, delicious pasta without the carbs
  • Versatile kitchen tool makes veggie spaghetti, stir-fries, juliennes and more
  • Great for zucchini, squash, carrots, cucumbers and potatoes
  • Spiral slicer has dual stainless-steel cutting blades for thick or thin pasta strands

I love my Veggetti! My first attempt at spiralizing was zucchini. It was so easy. I ended up tossing the zucchini style pasta (aka zoodles) with marinara sauce and leftover roasted veggies for a quick, easy filling dinner. I could not convince hubby to try the “pasta” though (I am not surprised- tried to get him to eat spaghetti squash once and it was met with a similar resistance).

I did learn that I need to spin a while and then stop. Otherwise I have 2 feet long zoodles. It’s endless spaghetti! In the time it took me to reheat my spaghetti sauce, I had a plate full of zoodles.

They say you can slice potatoes and I tried using sweet potatoes. The results were not what I had hoped. I guess it was probably the circumference of the potato that caused me not to be able to get a good grip while spinning. Instead of long strands like what I had with the squash, I had little half inch pieces. I sautéed those in a little olive oil with onions and called it sweet potato hash. It was tasty so I cannot complain, but I would not go so far as to say that the Veggetti is versatile.

As you can tell, they say it is great for “zucchini, squash, carrots, cucumbers and potatoes”. All of these vegetables are cylindrical. From a practical standpoint, I already told you my experience with the potatoes. I have not tried to noodle-ize carrots but I think you should not try this with small or skinny carrots. It would be probably be difficult to grip the carrot while trying to spin at the same time.

So now, I am energized to keep spiralizing as much as possible, I found a website http://www.inspiralized.com/ with recipes. She has a more advanced spiralizer though. I am going to try to make her sweet potato “rice” one of these days. For now, I am sticking with preparing all of the squash “pasta” dishes.

The Opinionated Woman’s verdict: Great for making noodles out of long, cylindrical, softer vegetables, but not as versatile as advertised. Zucchini and carrots are the easiest for me. But for everything else, I probably need a different gadget.
