Appreciate Life: A poetry chapbook by Amaryllis Holloway-Turman

Not a review, just a shameless self-promotion

If you like poetry, check out my chapbook on iTunes. I have published through Smashwords and used the premium publishing feature to be able to market on iTunes. I have to upload myself to Amazon but have not had the chance yet.

I have divided the chapbook into a few sections dealing with different areas of life. Embracing the good, understanding the bad, and having a positive view of the future is help is our efforts to appreciate the gift of life.

Up until now, I was more focused on promoting at poetry events, craft fairs, and live occasions. Everyone who has read has told me that they have been able to find at least one poem that seemed to speak to them.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

Happy reading!

Miss Travel – the travel dating website

Even though I don’t usually review anything that I have not personally tried, I had to make an exception. I shared this post in May 2012 on my other blog. This is less of a review and more of an opinion piece.

Miss Travel – the travel dating website

Unlike other dating websites, this offers free travel for “beautiful people”. I know that they are trying to make this a classy website that is supposed to pair “generous people” (meaning people with money) with “attractive people” (meaning those who fit their standard of beauty). All I can think is that it is pairing people with more money than friends and people who agree that they should be rewarded for being born with pleasing features.
At first I thought that I might be suffering from sour grapes since I know that I probably do not fit media standards of what is beautiful. I look good enough, but I look nothing like the women shown on their home page. But then I realized that my main issue with the website is that it is essentially an escort service. I like the website tries to make it sound like this is all about matching travelers so that people do not have to travel solo. If this was really about pairing people with similar interests to see a city or share a vacation, they would have left off the part about the fact that the most important quality of the travel companion is their looks.
The people who will use this “travel dating” or matchmaker service will probably be middle age pudgy, balding, rich men with the type of personalities that make it difficult for them to function in most social settings. The website said that the travel companion has to be beautiful but made no such similar demands on those funding aforementioned travel excursions. Since the website is called Miss Travel, it stands to reason that the majority of the benefactors would be male. As it seems that this is supposed to be a dating service that facilitates the happy-ever-after ending, I would not be surprised if these girls are looking to be the eye candy for a sugar daddy that is financially secure enough to fund whatever they fancy for the long term. The guys might be looking for love with a beautiful person, but the girls are probably looking for big bank accounts.
With so much emphasis placed on the travel companion’s outer beauty, I wonder what kind of conversation will be had during the travels. I am not saying that intelligent people cannot be beautiful, but I have a hard time imagining that a smart pretty person would allow such objectification based solely on their appearance.
There can be no illusions during the trip. Each side knows how they arrived where they are. And I am sure it has to be a blow to the ego of the generous companion to know that this person who is considered “beautiful” would not give their generous benefactor a second glance if it had not been for fact he is paying for everything.
And on a baser level, since the generous companions are providing an all inclusive paid vacation for the beautiful person, what else might they think their payment entitles them to receive? It would be illegal for the website to imply the possibility that the generous companion might expect sex as part of the bargain. I would be interested to know if they are sharing hotel rooms on the vacation. If so, in a roundabout way, that beautiful person sold their body for a vacation in a popular locale. After it is all over, he has the pictures and a story to tell his friends and she has to answer at least one question, “Was it worth it?”

Iberostar Rivera Maya, Mexico

Last October, the hubby and I went to all-inclusive Iberostar Hotels & Resorts (hotel Tucán) in Riviera Maya. We flew into Cancun and took a shuttle ride for about an 30-45minutes to get to the resort. I have been to resorts before in Cancun, but it was my first time at this location.

Accommodations & Staff
I like how the resort embraced the natural environment instead of totally clearing the land, cutting down the trees and displacing the native wildlife. The resort looks like is situated in a jungle, full of lush plants and exotic animals (including howler monkeys) scampering all over the place. There were also water areas with turtles, ducks, swans, and iguanas.

The resort rooms were very spacious and comfortable. The bed was firm, but fine for me because I don’t like my bed to be too soft. In the bathroom, there was a large bottle of water use when brushing our teeth. It is understandable that in Mexico, you do not drink the tap water. The mini bar in the room was fully stocked every day, just the way I like it. I did not have to ask for anything because it seemed that they provided it before I had a chance to realize I needed it.

All of the staff, from the front desk personnel to the bartenders and maids were very friendly. They were helpful as well. I loved their willing attitude to help make my stay pleasant.

Activities
I was going to make the best of my visit and do as many activities as I could. I took a tennis lesson, did archery, did air rifle shooting, went to the spa, played pool, danced at the techno club and danced to salsa music band. I had to chase down the tennis pro for the tennis lesson. When I got to the tennis courts per the time on the activities schedule, he was not there. But when he finally showed up 5 minutes later, I was almost about to leave. I participated in the archery and air rifle shooting tournaments. I did not win in either activity. My aim is so bad.

When I went to the spa, that was the most relaxing part of my trip. I lounged in the Jacuzzi, sat in the sauna, took and shower and then got a full body massage. I was feeling stress free. It was worth every penny (spa treatments were extra cost).

The onsite night life was okay. I was surprised that there were not more people out at night. Maybe people went to clubs in town, but I did not want to chance that. Being in a different country in a touristy location puts a target on you increasing your chances of being robbed by some nefarious individual. I rather remain in the comforts of the closed gates of the resort.

When I danced at the techno club, there were not that many people there. At times, it was just my friends and me on the dance floor. Considering we were the only ones dancing, you would think that the DJ would have played the music WE wanted to hear. At one point, we were locking in a battle of wills. We refused to dance until he played what we wanted. We won, of course. In contrast, the salsa music band played all the music we wanted and we graced the dance floor with our presence.

The only things that I wanted to do but did not get a chance: a non-motorized water activity and karaoke. I did not realize that non-motorized water activity counter closed at 3pm since their hours were not posted anywhere that I could tell. The last day, I got there 2:30 and they guy told me that I could kayak but I had to be back by 3 since was the time they closed. I told him never mind. I did not want to try to rush and do it just to be able to say that I did it. I missed karaoke also because I did not they were only to going to offer that activity one night a week. I think they should have offered it more than once a week.

Food & Beverages
All inclusive resort means all drinks are included all the time. Great for me! Yes, the margaritas, pina coladas, daiquiris, and tequila shots were free flowing. But bottle water was just as necessary. Before venturing out to shop, I made sure I had one or two bottles of water from the front desk to carry with me. That saved me from having to buy water while I was out. Plus it was so hot, we needed plenty of fluids. No one wants to go on vacation and pass out from dehydration.

The only minor complaint that I have was with the buffet food. Some of the buffet food was not the quality I would have expected. Yes, there was plenty of food at the buffets, but some looked stale, reheated, or old. I think the challenge for a buffet restaurant is that they have to have enough food to satisfy the guests and at the same time, only put out what will be eaten during that time period. Since the resort is catering to people from all over the world, they are also trying to put out food that is familiar to their guests. I think they should have stuck to just cooking Mexican food since that is what they know best. The best food I had from the buffet were the typical native dishes.

Eating at the different "fancy restaurants" required a reservation. That took some planning on our part since the reservation needed to be done early. We at a Caribbean themed restaurant, Japanese steakhouse, and American steakhouse. The food quality was better than having buffet food all the time. In that aspect, it was worth the effort to make the reservation. I think the best meal I had was the pork chops at the American steakhouse (top right picture). They were perfectly seasoned and cooked well so that they were not dry.

Overall, I had a good time at the resort. The accommodations were great. There were plenty of activities to keep me occupied. The food at times left something to be desired, but it was filling and I did not get sick off of any of it. So that is a plus. I would go to another Iberostar location and I would recommend Iberostar (this resort in particular) to others.

Ask for it (Georgian #1)- Sylvia Day romance novel

Ask For It

Marcus is a spy assigned to investigate the murder of Elizabeth’s husband because of reasons having to do with espionage. Elizabeth and Marcus were engaged four years ago. She saw him in a compromising situation with a woman, and she ran off and married another man. Now a widow, Marcus has set his sights on engaging Elizabeth in a discreet affair.

I was super annoyed with both characters in Ask For It for these reasons

  1. I believe that no means no. The first love encounter, Elizabeth was really playing hard to get by telling Marcus is no. But he insists. I get that she was giving mixed signals. But she is tied up at one point. Not cool! If I as the reader have confusion about it being consensual, I am uncomfortable. I continued reading to make sure it all turned out okay. Marcus showed some concern after the fact, as if he wanted to make sure she really wanted it. But he should have stopped when she said no the first time.
  2. Elizabeth wants/loves(?) Marcus. She learns that she misunderstood the events that fateful night that changed their lives, leading her to wed another man. That being said, why does she give him grief about his love life while she was married? She did not even seem apologetic that she jumped to conclusions. Somehow it was still his fault.
  3. Once they were married (and this was no way near the end of the story), I would have thought Marcus would have been happy. But then he started acting like more of an emotional jerk. Hot. Cold. It gave me a headache.

Overall, Ask For It was not for me. Maybe some will like the back-and-forth between the main characters. And others might like the steamy love scenes . But as for me, I found it too tiresome. And a note of caution if you decide to read this book: it contains a lot of F-bombs . Is that how they talked back then? I would not know since I am not a historical linguistics expert.

Unfinished Business – Nora Roberts

Unfinished Business (Silhouette Intimate Moments) – Nora Roberts

Vanessa is a world renown piano player who returns to the town of her youth. Brady was her high school sweetheart, but he broke her heart when he stood her up on prom night. After her father dies, she returns to her home town for some time for reflection and to decide what she wants out of life.

As usual, for romance novels like these, Brady still loves Vanessa. She has feelings for him too, but she is upset with him for what he did to her all those years ago.

I think that there was not enough communication in this story. Brady should have told Vanessa earlier in the story the REAL reason why did not take her to the prom. And maybe I am so used to external forces causing havoc in young romances, but I could tell straight away that her father has something to do with it. He was too controlling and demanding.

And that seemed to be the elephant in the room. No one wanted to tell Vanessa that her father ruined her relationships in order to isolate her. They just made comments like “That’s odd” and dismissed it.  Her father made sure that she thought he was all she had. I am sure he did it to make sure she stayed focused on her career, but it was in the attainment of goals he wanted, not necessarily the life that she would have chosen for herself.

The bright point of this story for me was that Vanessa finally got her mother’s side of what happened. She was able to deal with the bitterness she felt towards her mother and repair that damaged relationship. This also helps her to make decisions about what she wants out of life in order to be happy. The grudges she held for so long were based on distortions of the truth.

Even though Unfinished Business (Silhouette Intimate Moments) was a romance novel, I think that it was more a story about learning to forgive past transgressions and love family. It is a good, predictable book for a Saturday afternoon.
