WHERE THERE’S SMOKE #cowboy #romance

WHERE THERE’S SMOKE (A Cowboy Way Novella) by Becky McGraw

3heart

Synopsis

Austin loves firefighting and decides that he will put in an application for the open position for fire chief in town. He has the experience and he has the skills. There is only one person in his way: Sunny.

Sunny wanted the job as chief because she needs the money to support her son. She was the only one who wanted it before Austin came along. Now she is trying to fight her attraction to the man that she sees as her nemesis and the person standing between her and her goal to get what she wants.

Opinion

I am all for women in leadership roles. I try to give extra support when they are struggling to be successful in a male dominated environment. That being said, Sunny was a terrible supervisor. She was overcompensating to try to prove herself and that is what led to the constant turnover. And yet, I still have mixed feelings with the way that Austin came in and undermined her from the beginning.

I am married to a firefighter and can only imagine how difficult it might be for a woman. But it was hard for me to see her passion for the job when she kept saying that she needed the additional income. I think that when money is only factor in wanting a job, there will be something missing.

The chemistry between Sunny and Austin was there and like the saying goes, there is a thin line between love and hate. I was conflicted in rooting for their romance because of how Austin handled the job situation.

TOW Final Word: Buy, Borrow, Pass?
BORROW. I think the story is average, but that is not to say it lacked the entertainment factor. Since everything worked out to my satisfaction, I gave 3 hearts. I recommend it if you like cowboy or firefighter romances.

-Letter P – REKINDLED @AprilAtoZ #atozchallenge #firefighterromance

P is for Paige (Paige Tyler)

REKINDLED (Dallas Fire & Rescue)

Synopsis
Jax is a firefighter who just saves his best friend’s sister from a hotel fire. He thinks Skye is sexy but did not make a move because he fears what his best friend would do to him.

Skye is trying to start a new business in her hometown while trying to steer clear of her overbearing brother. She convinces Jax to help her when she needs a place to stay. While in close proximity, their emotions reveal feelings that they have had for each other for years but never before acted on them.

Opinion
This is my kind of book! My favorite trope is friends to lovers!

Jax and Skye were not besties, but friendly to each other. I still count this as a friends-to-lovers story because they knew each other for a long time before they got together. Plus they knew each other on a level outside of the romance. I believe this will contribute to a higher level of relationship success.

While I don’t mind violence (not gratuitous) in the story, I did not want Jax and Skye to have any conflict. The stalker aspect of the story was a bit over the top for me considering how sweet their love story was. I felt traumatized, like I had been the one kidnapped.

Other than that, the story flowed well. Skye’s brother Dane was super protective, but knew when to back off. Once they got together, he was pretty accepting of their whole romance. I hope the author has plans to write his story in a future book. It will be on my TBR list.

TOW Final Word: Buy, Borrow, Pass?
BUY. Jax is a HOTTIE FIREFIGHTER. Need I say anything else?

H is for Hunter (Sable Hunter)

TEXAS WILDFIRE by Sable Hunter

4heart
Synopsis
Titan has been in love with his captain’s wife since he first saw her. He did not know she was married at the time. Once he found out, he made sure that he did nothing that might be perceived as improper. He is content to lover her from afar because he is too honorable to break up her marriage.

Makenna has no options. Her husband is abusive and she fears for her life. Everyone thinks that he is great which only exacerbates her isolation. What helps her cope is the fantasies she has about Titan, wishing she had married him instead.

When Titan finds out about her dire situation, it makes him wish that he had done something sooner.

Opinion
I really liked this book because it addresses the number one question people ask a person in an abusive relationship: “Why did you stay?” This is a true to life situation.

Makenna thought she did not have any options and was resigned to being abused. She lived in her fantasy world because that was better than dwelling on the fact that she married a man with Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde persona.

There are 2 issues that I usually deduct points (1) being on the rebound (2) one of the main characters being legally married.

Technically I think that she is not on the rebound because she has not been in love with her husband for years. She would leave if she was not in total fear for her life.

Yes, on paper, she is still married, but considering he is trying to kill her, I did not penalize the story’s rating. Even with the budding emotional relationship, Titan and MaKenna were still respectful to the fact that she was married when it came to getting physical.

Overall, I am glad that Titan and MaKenna have a HEA, but I wish that her ex suffered more than he did. I hate bullies.

TOW Final Word: Buy, Borrow, Pass?
BUY! I think the author handled this topic in a very gracious way. All the while, she highlighted how domestic violence can occur and subtly emphasizes why victims need so much moral support instead of people turning a blind eye.

Can’t help falling in love #Sullivanseries – #BellaAndre

Can’t Help Falling In Love (The Sullivans Book 3)
3heart

Synopsis

Megan is a widow whose first husband was an adrenaline junkie died in a plane crash. Now mother a 7-year old daughter, she lives in an apartment in San Francisco. When there is a fire, the firefighter who saves her and her daughter is Gabe. While she is attracted to Gabe, she has a rule not to date men whose jobs are dangerous.

Gabe is a firefighter who is used to being the hero. However, he gets tired of people putting him on that pedestal and expecting him to be perfect. That is why he has a rule not to date women that he saves while firefighting. The rule was a result of a failed relationship that he attributed to that fact. Even though he tries hard to avoid a relationship with Megan, it seems that the attraction is too strong.

“There was an earthquake going on inside her from nothing more than Gabe’s hot eyes staring at her from across the room.”

Opinion

Gabe was a hottie firefighter. Love him. When he decided what he wanted, he was a man with a plan.

While in the beginning Megan and Gabe has their reasons for thinking they were not right for each other, it seemed the rest of the characters were conspiring to ensure they got together. Megan’s daughter was the most devious of the bunch in that aspect. It was humorous the way that Gabe and Megan were fighting the attraction.

The growing heat in his eyes was response enough for her to realize that she already gone off course on the whole ‘nothing but friends’ thing

I understand Megan’s reasons for trying to avoid a relationship with Gabe. As the wife of a firefighter, I know the reality of fighting fires is that their lives can be in danger. But after a while, I wanted to tell Megan to get a grip. She was sending so many mixed messages to Gabe. At least she worked out all of her hang ups and let herself be happy.

SIDENOTE: A long time ago (about 3 years), I read a book by Bella Andre and I thought it was trashier than my normal trashy. I cannot remember the story line but I remember thinking it was ridiculous. For a while I would not read any of Bella Andre’s books. I think because I have a soft spot for firefighters, I decided to give her a try again. I enjoyed reading “Can’t help falling in love” and I am looking forward to reading other books in the Sullivan series.

For the record, this book does not qualify as a trashy romance.
