Mating Wars: Cygnus

Synopsis
Aura is looking for scrap metals or anything of value in space so that she can sell it and eke out a living instead of fighting in the wars on earth.
Cygnus is a purple skinned bear shifter who has been in stasis, floating in his pod in space. Soon after he awakes, his pod is found by Aura. After a run in with pirates, they are on the run for their lives.

Opinion
This was a fun story! I do not prefer first POV books, but I was intrigued to read about 7-foot purple skinned bear shifter alien with teal genitalia. It was something about the description that made me so interested.
Once I started reading, I was hooked. There is a lot of dialogue and that helps keep the story moving.

Aura was very feisty and held her own with Cygnus. He thinks that he has to defend Aura and cannot understand why she does not stay on the sidelines while he proceeds to fight on their behalf.

What is hilarious is that every time that Aura saves him out of a sticky situation, Cygnus takes it as a “shame debt” that he has to repay. Plus, Aura has to teach him the benefits of being polite since he is used to using his strength to get whatever he wants.

Even though the whole idea of a female holding her own is a culture shock to Cygnus, it all ends well because he is genuinely a nice guy that is trying to do what is best.

Thursday Thoughts: Featuring Author Michael Shusko #military #suspense

Welcome to TOW bi-monthly feature Thursday’s Thoughts. On the second and fourth Thursday of each month, I share the thoughts of a featured author in the form of answers to questions I posed to them.

One of January’s featured authors is Michael Shusko.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing since my first deployment to Iraq in 2003. It started as a way to pass the time, and to deal with some of the stressors of being deployed to a combat zone and missing my family. Then, my triplet sons were just three years old. I began writing about the many experiences and feelings that arise from living in a war-torn country, and interweaving those thoughts into stories. I found that I very much enjoyed writing and, in fact, it became therapeutic. I continued writing when I returned to the United States in 2004, and have written dozens of manuscripts in various stages of completion. Six of these manuscripts are part of the Tradecraft series that I’ve begun publishing, starting with Vector. It’s interesting that I was in my late thirties when I discovered my love of writing. Now, I can’t imagine ever not writing.

What is your favorite style of music?

Do you listen while you write? I enjoy music from the 60s through 80s as well as classical and contemporary music. As a native of New Jersey, of course Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi are among my favorite musicians. But I don’t listen while I write. I prefer to write in a quiet setting where I can focus on the emotions of the scene. This is usually very early in the morning, mostly before work.

What is your advice to someone new to writing?

Write from your heart and never give up. If you believe in your writing and your story, persevere to see it in print. It took me over a decade to get Vector published — but the wait was well worth it. And I believe I’m a better author thanks to the things I learned about writing and the publishing industry along the way.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Relax with my amazing wife and three sons, now 16 years old. We enjoy traveling and experiencing new cultures, much of which I try to incorporate into my stories. I try to balance my life as much as possible: write in the morning before work, focus on my patients in my clinic during the day, then relax with my family at night.

Who is Michael Shusko?  He was raised in Long Branch, NJ. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1985 after graduating high school. Dr. Shusko cut his teeth in the military in the mid ’80s and early ’90s. As his first assignment, he attended the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monterey, CA, where he studied Arabic. He has traveled extensively throughout the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Asia, and has been awarded the Bronze Star twice for service in Iraq and Afghanistan. He currently lives in Japan with his wife and 16-year-old triplet boys..

Book blurb: When researcher Jawad Khattib gasps his last breath on the Massachusetts General Hospital floor, the Department of Homeland Security wants answers—especially after a preliminary autopsy suggests he died of radiation poisoning. What exactly was Khattib working on? And who was he working for? DHS Agent Lee Jansen is rushed to Boston and paired with expert toxicologist Dr. Emma Hess to crack the case. All evidence points to the creation of a dirty bomb, but the clues seem too clean, too obvious. During the course of their investigation, they discover the horrible truth. This new weapon is far more deadly than anyone had expected. It isn’t just capable of killing hundreds—it’s capable of killing hundreds of thousands. Can they stop what’s been set in motion by a madman with a dangerous secret before it’s too late?

Excerpt

“You going to stand there all day or get this sh*t done and over with, b*tch?” He stands with his arms spread open as if he’s waiting for me to drive the first punch. That’s exactly what I do. I nail him with a right hook that lands on the side of his temple. He staggers, but before I have time to swing again, he plows into me with a kick to my stomach, followed by a punch that leads to a crunching noise from my nose. Blood spurts down my face, and pain ricochets from one side of my head to the other. His arms go up like he’s challenging me to come at him again.
“Come on, Harris, you need this. I can take it, you p*ssy. Let’s go.” And I explode with that phrase. I grab him by the back of the neck, rolling us to the floor. Fists start flying fast and furious as if we’re fighting for our lives. An explosive punch to his ribs sets him off exactly how I want him. He attacks with the force I need. Brutal punches to my face bring pain to the surface before a sweep of my leg has me dropping back down to the floor. I welcome the pain. I need the pain. It eggs me on and revitalizes me in a way I crave.
My next move is both spontaneous and unpredictable even to myself. I move swiftly and smoothly, snapping up off the floor. A swift kick to his jaw before I tumble backwards leaves him stunned and holding his face.
This is a fight with no rules, no winner, where neither one of us is looking to be the undisclosed master. It’s a language all of its own. This is a lesson I need and one he’s been dying to give. Only, I don’t plan to make it easy on him.
I know I’m hiding behind a mask of despair, and knowing this is when I let my guard down, when I decide to surrender and allow the man who has been doing his job as a friend to try and bring me back to the man I once was. I allow him to get one last destructive punch in. This is the one I need the most. The one that clearly knocks me on my g*ddamn ass until I’m lying there breathing heavily.
My mind starts to tell me it’s time to move on. My chest explodes inside, and I finally feel the shards of reality that are heating up the blood pumping through my veins. It’s time to realize she isn’t coming back to me. It’s time for me to take the lesson of life that has pulled me under this rough, intense current of self-destruction. It’s his punch to the side of my head that f***ing makes me feel I’m alive. Here’s the best part though, I don’t care if I’m alive. I care about nothing. This isn’t living, and yet it’s all I’ve got.
