Synopsis
A dragon as a handyman? Ridiculous.

At least Liam Steel thinks so. Sure, he and his crew of newly-awakened metal dragons are experts at building things, but after being sunk at the bottom of a frozen ocean, all they want is to find the mates they were sailing in search of in the first place, and Liam isn’t sure how that can happen while he’s playing in the dirt. Until he meets his first client, a sweet, curvy, no-nonsense business-woman busy taking care of everyone but herself. His heart screams ‘mate’, and he’s ready to get his hands on more than her yard.

Kate Hinton doesn’t know what to make of the beefcake Rent-A-Dragon sent over to help with her yard. Impossibly tall with soulful teal eyes, dark hair, and the features of a male model, she’s pretty sure he should be walking a runway rather than digging trenches in her yard. And the way he looks at her? Like nothing else matters in the world. But the more she gets to know her kind, friendly, amazingly efficient handyman, the more she is realizing he’s not from her world.

He lives in a remodeled castle. He doesn’t know certain modern words. And he definitely doesn’t understand the rules of modern courtship. But somehow, Kate is finding herself falling in love with this ‘dragon’ all the same, and finding out there is a whole other world outside her own. One full of secrets, and danger, and maybe even the love of a lifetime.

Opinion
I have been waiting for this series for a while now and Bolryder did not disappoint. OMG!!!! I love Liam. He was too cute. The only thing he wants is to settle down with his mate and love her for life. All he needs is to find her.

Kate had a bad previous relationship and has decided she wants to maintain boundaries to prevent them from moving too quickly. It does not help that being with Liam just “seems right”.

While she is struggling to show her independence, it seems more nefarious powers are at play trying to keep them apart. Plus, she thinks he is crazy for saying he is a dragon.

In the end, they get their happy ending and I am stoked for this new series. Glad to read about a somewhat-happy-on-the-outside Aegis and a very-much-in-love Opal.

BUY. Liam is a sweetheart. This was a great beginning to the new series while continuing in the world that Bolryder created.

Dazzled (Dragon Mates Book 1)

Synopsis
Sebastian is a dragon shifter and art collector. He has been searching for the remainder of his treasure that was stolen from his family.

Lacey is lead curator for Sebastian’s art collection exhibit. She is aware of their chemistry and attraction but she does not want to act on it because she works for him.

Opinion
It seems the story begins in the middle of their romance. Sebastian and Lacey have been working together for some time. I don’t know how I feel about Sebastian being so flirty because I think that he was probably a borderline sexual harassment case waiting to happen.

It’s a good thing she was actually into him and playing hard to get. I won’t even begin to imagine would have happen had she NOT wanted a relationship with him. Hopefully, her “NO” would have meant no to him.

Other than that potential awkwardness, the story was your standard man-chases-woman-until-he-gets-her story. Their chemistry was good. Then a misunderstanding and a little subterfuge almost tears them apart. Sebastian realizes his mistake but it’s almost too late.

Despite the fact that they knew each other for a while, I still rate this as an insta-lust to love story.

Synopsis
Dante is the Gold dragon. He is collared and the oracle said the only way to fully access his powers is to mate a human. He has been trying to figure out how that is going to happen because he does not want to be mated. Then he meets Ella. After acting like a total jerk, he realizes he wants to do whatever he can to win her.

Ella just wants a fake fiancé. No romance. No touching. Nothing. Setting boundaries is about her controlling what happens to her. She has some secrets that she would rather leave untold. Plus, she has low self-esteem because of childhood bullying.

Opinion
I love Terry Bolryder’s dragon shifter books. She has them divided into categories. First, were the Awakened Dragons who were precious stones. Then the Rent-A-Dragon series who were metals. And now, we have the precious metal dragons in the Date-A-Dragon series!

I am so surprised that Terry Bolryder has not run out of ideas!!! I have read so many of her books and they have such different plots. This one was no different. He seems to be like Diamond dragon (from the Awakened Dragon series) in a way because he is so arrogant. But then he has a little bit more concern for humans, though not by much.

I think Dante has to woo Ella more than other dragons with their mates because of her history. I felt sympathetic to her situation. She is strong in her own way, because she has found a way to cope in a bad situation. And then there were some unexpected twists. It made for a great story. I think this is my new favorite.

I CANNOT wait for the next books. I am hoping that Citrine will be next.

Dirty Shame by Tess Oliver

 

Synopsis
Kellan is a coal miner.

Rylan is the daughter to a coal owner big wig.

In high school, they thought that they would stay together because they were in love. But something happened and Kellan treated her like the relationship was over. Then Rylan heard rumors that Kellan was cheating on her, and she was heartbroken.

Opinion
Kellan and Ryland meet back up and the attraction is instantaneous. I wish they had had communicated more in the beginning. These needed to be a little more talking and less jumping in the bed with one another.

Also, the backdrop for this story depressed me. It was such a sad town that was lacking in economic opportunities for the average person. The rich held all of the wealth with little regard to the poor people in their midst. Added to that, there was strict segregation of the two classes. The way that the author had of highlighting the socio-economical issues of this town, left me without any hope. Sure Kellan and Rylan will get together, but they are going to most likely struggle. A LOT. I know that I’m probably being a Debbie Downer right now. But whatevs.

I might have liked the book better if by the end, Kellan was going to get another job. I understand that coal mining is a way to make an honest living. No one mentions that Kellan will probably get black lung or some other health problem associated with mining coal. Part of the happy ever after scenario should not include a shorten lifespan. Too much like real life.

Fire Lord’s Assistant

Synopsis
The Grotesquerie is a circus with alien performers. People think the acts are staged, not realizing that the aliens’ abilities allow them to do amazing feats. Kerr has an act as a Fire Lord, but in reality he is a dragon shifter.

Lauren is a government agent working undercover as Kerr’s assistant. She is part of the investigation to discover who is the real culprit behind a crime Kerr’s brother was arrested for committing. The crime was selling illegal alien technology and Kerr is determined to prove that his brother was innocent.

Opinion
Genre wise, I would consider this more of a short mystery instead of a romance. The romance piece was more about their physical attraction to one another. It seemed it was more lust than something that could blossom into love. Because the story was short, there wasn’t a lot of time to develop their relationship. They gave into their seeming attraction after a few stolen kisses.

Kerr had a mate before and I was not sure if he was really over her. He knew Lauren was his mate but he was persistent in fighting the attraction. That got old very quickly.

I gave the story extra points because the mystery aspect had me guessing right up until the moment the villain revealed himself. Even after he confessed, I was still unsure of his motives at first.

I also liked the fact that the aliens used a circus to be among humans, while not technically hiding their true nature.

Borrow. The story was not anything exceptional, but it was entertaining.
